IBPS English Grammar Nouns Notes for Bank Exam

A sentence is made up of different words. Every word has its different use and are thus classified into different groups. These groups or classes are called the Parts of Speech. Noun is one such Part of Speech and here we will explain the meaning of Nouns and types of Nouns with examples.

Nouns

A noun(संज्ञा)  is a part of speech that denotes Person, Animal, Thing, Place or Idea. (Remember: TIPPA ) They tell us what we are talking about.

Must Know :  The English word noun has its roots in the Latin word nomen, which means “name.”

Example: The words cat, rock, India , it , man, woman, teacher, Smith , Priyanka are nouns.

Types Of Nouns

Common NounsProper NounsCollective Nouns

A common noun is the word used for a class of person, place or thing.

Examples: car, man , bridge, town, water, metal, ammonia

Nouns have different classifications as well -

Types of Common Nouns

A proper noun is the name of a person, place or thing. A proper noun always starts with a capital letter. For example:

Rules for Proper Nouns:

A collective noun is the word used for a group of people or things.
For example:

Our team is enjoying an unbroken winning streak.

There’s a pack of hyenas outside.

Watch out for that swarm of bees.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a herd of wild horses.

Our class graduates two years from now.
